
Our 5th-grade Internet classroom at Auburn Elementary School in Riner, Virginia
went on line October 19, 1996, six weeks after project award notification
by the US Department of Education. Among the most advanced classroom
laboratories in the country, it is supporting investigation of the educational effects
of immersive technology-based constructivism. After a brief adaptation period for
the children, we will begin family training and placement of computers in
their homes.
Our basic classroom configuration is as follows:
- Classroom server: Gateway p5-200 on T1
- Classroom computers: 12 Gateway p5-133 on T1, double keyboards
- LCD Projector: Polaroid 110, 500 lumens
- I/O: HP Laserjet 5M network printer and Scanjet 4C
- Digital Camera: Kodak DC-50
- Home computers: 24 Gateway p5-200 with HP Deskjet 694
- Internet provider: Citizen's Network, Floyd, Virginia
Software for all configurations is as follows:
- OS: MS Windows '95
- Office Suite: MS Office Professional 7
- Imaging: Paintshop Pro
- Anti-Virus: F-Prot Pro in the classroom and McAfee for the home
- Security: Cybersitter
- Networking: MS TCP/IP, Internet Explorer, Internet Chameleon 5
